Help Files Do Not Display in ServicingDirector

Microsoft no longer includes WinHlp32.exe as a component of Windows operating systems and third party software developers are no longer authorized to redistribute WinHlp32.exe. WinHlp32.exe is used to view 32 bit help files that have the .HLP extension.

All ServicingDirector clients using Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2 must perform a WinHelp file support workaround to view Servicing Director Help.

Workaround:

  1. Download WinHlp32.exe from the Microsoft Download Center. To do this, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607.
  2. If your IT department has set up group policies, see Registry entries and group policies for network administrators at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607#3 for information about enabling support for viewing WinHelp files. Otherwise, continue to Step 3.
  3. Log on as an administrator on the computer where you will view the Servicing Director Help.
  4. Install WinHlp32.exe.
  5. Click Start and type regedit in the Start Search box; then, click regedit in the Programs list.
  6. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  7. Do one of the following:
  • On 32-bit versions of Windows locate the following registry subkey, and then click it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft
  • On 64-bit versions of Windows locate the following registry subkey, and then click it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft
  1. On the Edit menu, point to New; then, click Key.
  2. Type WinHelp; then, press ENTER.
  3. Click the WinHelp key. On the Edit menu, point to New; then, click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  4. Type AllowProgrammaticMacros; then, press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, click Hexadecimal in the Base area; then, click OK.
  7. Exit the Registry Editor.
