Root Cause:

Servicing Director Help uses Windows Help to display the product's help topics.  This error will appear when you press the F1 Key to access Servicing Director help.

Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) is a Help program that has been included with Microsoft Windows versions starting with the Microsoft Windows 3.1 operating system. However, the Windows Help program has not had a major update for many releases and no longer meets Microsoft's standards. Therefore, starting with the release of Windows Server 2008, the Windows Help program will not ship as a feature of Windows. ` 

Workaround:

If you want to view 32-bit .hlp files, you must download and install the program (WinHlp32.exe) from the Microsoft Download Center.  After you install Windows Help for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft reports some functionality for the file may not function correctly, and you may receive the error message above. 

To view Servicing Director Help on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2:

If your IT department has set up group policies, see “Registry entries and group policies for network administrators” at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607 for information about enabling support for viewing Winhelp files. Otherwise, continue with these steps below.

  1. Log on as an administrator on the computer where you will view the Servicing Director Help.
  2. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
  3. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  4. Do one of the following:
  • On 32-bit versions of Windows locate the following registry subkey, and then click it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft
  • On 64-bit versions of Windows locate the following registry subkey, and then click it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft
  1. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  2. Type WinHelp, and then press ENTER.
  3. Click the WinHelp key. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  4. Type AllowProgrammaticMacros, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, click Hexadecimal in the Base area, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.
