Unable to enumerate servers on this machine

When attempting to do an install, you receive the following error:
Unable to Enumerate Servers on this Machine.  Check the WMI or continue the install. When the drop list is shown, manually enter the server name and continue, otherwise contact support for assistance.

This exception message may also appear:

SQL Server WMI provider is not available on .Invalid namespace

Root Cause:
This is a  Servicing Director database product installation error. The Servicing Director database product installation should be run on a server with a supported version of Microsoft SQL server already installed with the required Servicing Director settings.

This error indicates the server does not have SQL server installed, or if SQL server is installed, then there is a problem finding it.

Workaround:

If the server displaying this error does not have SQL server installed already, then please review your configuration, because Servicing Director requires a SQL server with the required settings to be present when installing the Servicing Director database product. Confirm whether you are installing the database product on the right server.  If it is the right server, review the Servicing Director System Requirements, and use the information there to install SQL server before installing the Servicing Director database product. You will find the System Requirements article in the knowledge base.

If the server displaying this error does have SQL Server installed already, then perform the following steps:

  1. Restart your Windows server.
  2. Retry the service pack installation, using the extra Windows procedures described by the installation instructions to use a Windows Command Prompt opened with a right-click>Run as Administrator.
  3. If the same error continues, click OK on the error popup screen, and continue the installation as instructed.
  4. Enter the correct SQL server name or instance name when prompted on the Database Username and Password screen.  The SQL Server Name (Instance) field will be blank in this case, and you will need to manually enter the name.
  5. The rest of the installation should continue normally.

Note: Until the root cause of the issue is resolved, future Servicing Director database products may continue to have this error, and you will have to continue to manually enter the SQL server name or instance name. Often the cause for the error is an issue with Microsoft WMI, where WMI does not have correct information about your SQL Server Management Object.  To resolve a WMI issue, use your Microsoft WMI support information.
