Servicing Director Applications are an Option for the Server

The Servicing Director applications can optionally be installed on the Servicing Director database server, but they are not required to be on the server. There is a Servicing Director database product, separate from the applications product, but of the same version, which is required to be on the server.
Here are some of the considerations for placing the applications on the server:
  • One of the largest tasks of the applications is to perform the Event Manager end of day run for all scheduled events. Since the Event Manager end of day needs to run every business day, and potentially run after business hours, it can be best to run at the end of the day on a computer always known to be online and ready. The end of day can be performed on any computer with the applications installed, but the server may be the computer always online and ready to perform task at any time of day.
  • The end of day tasks may complete faster on a computer with the most hardware resources, such as memory and processing power. The server may be the computer with the most computer resources for running the applications.
  • The database will be local to the applications on the server, and the connection properties will be different from desktop computers. For example, the Shared Memory client protocol can be used for the connection, instead of TCP/IP.
  • Transferring database information can be faster, because there is no network transit time.
  • The applications must be configured to use a network shared folder, named \SvcData. If the \SvcData folder is a local folder on the server, then access to this folder will be in most cases as a local folder, rather than as a remote folder across the network.
  • For larger sets of data, such as a large report, there can be competing considerations. The data does not need to be transferred to the desktop computer, making the data ready for the report much faster. However, the rendering of the report is a local application task, one of the most demanding application tasks on the computer, and having this task done on the server can mean the database server and the application rendering the report may be competing with each other for resources.
  • For the administrator or local IT, it is convenient to have access to the applications wherever the server is located. One way to achieve this is to have the applications on the server.
